📰 The Quick Hits

Water Disruption in Tunbridge Wells

South East Water has warned residents in central and south Tunbridge Wells. They may experience no water or low pressure from 23:00 BST on Thursday to 04:00 BST on Friday due to repairs on a leak.

Affected areas include Bayhall Road to Broadwater Down. Water may appear brown when it returns, but it is safe to use.

Plans for 360 Homes in Tunbridge Wells

Esquire Developments has submitted initial plans to build 360 homes in Tunbridge Wells. The plans also include a 70-bed care home, and a children's nursery. As a result, Tunbridge Wells Rugby Club would be relocated to East Sussex.

The proposed development spans 86 acres and involves land within both Tunbridge Wells and Wealden Districts. Construction could start next year, with completion by 2030. An environmental impact assessment is not deemed necessary.

Drug Dealer Jailed After Cocaine Spill

video preview

Police caught drug dealer, Abdallah Chakir in Tunbridge Wells. Dozens of cocaine wraps fell from his trouser leg when police stopped his vehicle. Despite claiming he was returning from clubbing in London, searches revealed he had been running a drug supply chain across Kent.

Chakir, 36, pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to supply. The court sentenced Chakir to two years and eight months in prison on 29 August.

No Asylum Seekers in Tunbridge Wells Hotels

New figures show the Government is housing no asylum seekers in hotels in Tunbridge Wells as of June. This is consistent with the previous year. In the UK, the number of asylum seekers in hotels has dropped by 41%. Although c.30,000 remain in such accommodation.

Refugee charities argue that hotels are unsuitable, leaving vulnerable people isolated and at risk of far-right attacks. The national asylum backlog has decreased by 32% over the past year, with 118,900 people still awaiting decisions. There are ongoing calls to allow asylum seekers to work while their applications are processed.
